In an amazing feat of investigative reporting, Freedberg relates the bizarre saga of the Temple of Love (aka the Hebrew Israelites), a Miami-based sect founded in the late 1970s by Oklahoma-born evangelist-messiah Hulon Mitchell Jr., whose followers proclaimed him the savior of black people. To his supporters, Mitchell-now in prison on a 1992 conspiracy conviction; he will be released in 2001 and eligible for parole earlier-is a positive force who taught African Americans self-empowerment. But media and police accounts link his organization to a series of brutal murders, and testimony at his dramatic trial (which deadlocked on a racketeering charge of murder, arson and extortion) portrayed a cruel cult rife with mind control, assaults and slave labor. Mitchell, who calls himself Yahweh Ben Yahweh ("God, Son of God") also beat three murder raps when Florida state attorney Janet Reno (now U.S. Attorney General) lost one death-row case against him and dropped charges on two other homicides. Freedberg, who won a 1991 Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of this story for the Miami Herald, tells a searing cautionary tale of a man who used race and religion as a shield to exploit people and amass power and wealth. At the age of three, Hulon Mitchell declared that he was the messiah of black people, and at various stages of his life he was known as Hulon X, Father Michel, Brother Love, Moses Israel, Yahweh Ben Yahweh, Yashua the Messiah, and, finally, God himself. Freedberg, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of Yahweh for the Miami Herald, meticulously details the life of this charismatic son of a preacher, including his poor childhood in Oklahoma, his military service, his work in the Civil Rights movement, and his growing disenchantment with organized religion. His nationwide empire was eventually brought down by charges of murder, arson, sexual coercion, and mail fraud. The writing is crisp and well documented, and the black-and-white photos are numerous and graphic. An excellent chronicle of greed, exploitation, and murder, all ostensibly in the name of religion.

A gripping yet somewhat unsatisfying account of one of America's weirder stories: the saga of Yahweh Ben Yahweh (God Son of God), the Miami-based charismatic black man who called himself the Messiah. Freedberg, who won a 1991 Pulitzer Prize for her Miami Herald coverage of Yahweh, reconstructs events in an animated narrative. Hulon Mitchell Jr., born in Oklahoma in 1935, led many lives: gung- ho Air Force man; NAACP supporter; Black Muslim proselytizer; Atlanta radio evangelist; and Orlando street preacher. In 1978, he moved to Miami and launched a new religion that boosted black identity, denigrated whites, and declared that a journey to a Promised Land was near. He built a headquarters for the group (whose many names included the Nation of Israel and the Tribe of Judah) in riot-scarred Liberty City, where his turbaned, white- robed followers not only proselytized and sold taped sermons and food, but also contributed tithes and welfare checks. Laggards were punished and critics beaten, one even killed in the group's Temple of Love. Meanwhile, Yahweh's followers won favor with local politicians, manipulated the media, and gained a reputation as a group that could reclaim ghetto real estate. Then, one month after Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez had proclaimed Yahweh Ben Yahweh Day in 1990, the FBI swooped in to arrest Yahweh and several followers. A bizarre and complex trial led to the convictions of Yahweh and some of those charged with him for conspiracy involving various acts of violence (Yahweh got 18 years); but Yahweh beat three state murder raps. Though Freedberg scores the justice system for not addressing the political corruption that accommodated Yahweh and his personality cult, she does too little to explain the sect's appeal to blacks or to question the coddling posture of establishment institutions toward Yahweh (or her own newspaper's delay in picking up on the story). Well-written Account on Cult Fanaticism

This true account of the Nation of Yahweh is shocking, stunning, and at times painfully hilarious. I can honestly say the author was unbiased and is strictly reporting the facts, using exact times and dates when describing certain incidents and she uses the same vocabulary that the actual people who are part of this bizarre drama used. In the back of the book is a list of Resources that she used in the writing of this book. On the one hand, it seems that the Nation of Yahweh cleaned and straightened up poor neighborhoods in Florida. But it came at a price, as this book eloquently describes.

As I read the book I felt a sad pity for the families of the members of this cult, and the cult members themselves. I also felt compassion for those whose loved ones were caught in the line of fire by members swept away in delusional fanaticism. There were times when I wanted to believe that what I was reading couldn't possibly be true, but when I saw the black and white photographs in this book, and especially when I read the details that describe some of the practices that are still in use by members of the Nation of Yahweh at the present time, I had to accept the inevitable.

The parts that were so ridiculous that I had to laugh were the incidents that took place during the trial- it makes one question the efficiency of law and order in America, the needless red tape and frustration for those who really are trying to bring justice. Also the frustration for those who have lost loved ones and yet see the murderers (and law breakers) get acquitted or just a slap on the wrist- in this case, the trial of Hulon Mitchell Jr. and Co. (also comes to mind is the O.J. Simpson case, and the police officers in the Rodney King beating.) This book also made me realize that we need to seriously rethink the jury process and how we select jurors in trials of this magnitude.

The book re-affirms how when money talks, bull**** walks, and anyone can be bought. I am referring of course to the business peoples, law enforcement, and politicians of Miami (and the other Florida cities that were mentioned) during the 1980's when these events took place. Many of them simply looked the other way despite the growing evidence that murders and other abuses were taking place because it simply would have costed them their careers, money, and votes.

As for the Nation of Yahweh, they are still alive and well; they're just not as out in the open as they once were and they are all spread out. Though there may no longer be any signs of racism in their present literature, many of the same rhetoric and codes of behavior that was described in detail in this book is still in use at the present time- example: Mr. Hulon Mitchell Jr. still believes he is the Messiah incarnate, Mr. Mitchell was "crucified" by the U.S. gov't (meaning he served jail time), Jesus never existed, women are unclean during their menstrual cycle, all forms of birth control are not to be used, having as many babies as soon as possible is the goal, occasionally wearing white tunics, turbans & tetragrammaton, tithing, mandatory attendance of the Feasts, the list goes on.

I highly recommend this book to:

-anyone who is dealing with a friend or family member who might be/or is in a cult
-students of law, psychology, and sociology.
-anyone involved with a Nation of Yahweh member, past or present.
-those considering joining the Nation of Yahweh
-those who like a good crime story-in this case, true crime.
-anyone sincerely willing to take a deep closer look at the American society and how it creates situations like the ones described in this book.

This book is a great example of excellent journalism- the kind that seems to no longer exists on most media outlets (be it ABC, NBC, Fox, or anything owned and operated by Clear Channel) unfortunately.

This book details the rise of the religious leader Yahweh ben Yahweh. From reading his own publications, he seemed to see himself (or Himself) as a returned Jesus. He quoted texts of Jesus from the Bible and applied them to himself. As a theologian and a Bible student, this as a bit unnerving. He published some books teaching Biblical Hebrew, which he considered to be a sacred language, but he was incorrect with some very basic letters. This book says that throughout his life he considered himself to be unique and that became evident when he started identifying himself with God (or Yahweh). This book cautions us to take care when alleged prophets make exalted claims. The basic message is, watch out. Be careful what you believe or accept.

About the Author
Dr. David R. Anderson is a textbook author and Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati. He has served as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management and as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. He was also coordinator of the College's first Executive Program. In addition to introductory statistics for business students, Dr. Anderson has taught graduate-level courses in regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and management science. He also has taught statistical courses at the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Professor Anderson has received numerous honors for excellence in teaching and service to student organizations. He is the coauthor of ten textbooks related to decision sciences and actively consults with businesses in the areas of sampling and statistical methods. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he earned his BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Purdue University.

Dr. Dennis J. Sweeney is a textbook author, Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis and founder of the Center for Productivity Improvement at the University of Cincinnati. He also served five years as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and four years as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. In addition, he has worked in the management science group at Procter & Gamble and has been a visiting professor at Duke University. Professor Sweeney has published more than 30 articles in the area of management science and statistics. The National Science Foundation, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Federated Department Stores, Kroger, and Cincinnati Gas & Electric have funded his research, which has been published in MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, OPERATIONS RESEARCH, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING, DECISION SCIENCES, and other journals. Dr. Sweeney is the coauthor of ten textbooks in the areas of statistics, management science, linear programming, and production and operations management. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he earned a BS degree from Drake University, graduating summa cum laude. He received his MBA and DBA degrees from Indiana University, where he was an NDEA Fellow.

Dr. Thomas A. Williams is Professor of Management Science in the College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology where he was the first chairman of the Decision Sciences Department. He teaches courses in management science and statistics, as well as graduate courses in regression and decision analysis. Before joining the College of Business at RIT, Professor Williams served for seven years as a faculty member in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati, where he developed the undergraduate program in Information Systems and then served as its coordinator. The co-author of 11 leading textbooks in the areas of management science, statistics, production and operations management, and mathematics, Professor Williams has been a consultant for numerous Fortune 500 companies and has worked on projects ranging from the use of data analysis to the development of large-scale regression models. He earned his B.S. degree at Clarkson University and completed his graduate work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Not the best book on the subject and the price......

I teach Stats 201 (Introduction to Business Statistics) and for years I used the textbook by Wiers, which I feel is the best in it's field. After numerous obsrvations by my colleagues in the department, we hope that will be going back to the previous author's book after the current stock of this one runs out.

I find this book to be confusing, and it tends to jump around a lot rather than give a structured look at the process of learning Statistics. It pays little or no attention to the use of random numbers and the terminology is confusing.

Perhaps the biggest drawback with this book is the price- almost 150 bucks for a textbook is outrageous. Buy the previous edition used- the difference is minimal, the price difference is significant. Better still- buy the book on the same subject by Wiers. Don't just take my word- compare the two....it's just my opinion.

Best text of first year MBA

Statistics is a mind-numbing subject. It's not easy, and not particularly exciting, either. This book doesn't exactly bring loads of fun to the subject, but it explains concepts well, provides pertinent examples, and offers plenty of useful practice problems.

The authors and publishers have paid particularly close attention to detail, ensuring, for instance, that all diagrams are on the same page as the concepts they elucidate. This may be a small thing to some, but I find it tiresome that with so many texts you are forced continually to flip back and forth from diagrams on one page to pertinent information on another.

I have a background in the Humanities and before the MBA stats course had not completed a math course since high school -- 20 years ago! (48th percentile quant GMAT!) My head was swimming after the first couple of lectures, but I sat down with this text, read it carefully, worked through ALL the problems, and received an A in the course. So far, I know of no other person that earned a full A, so the course was not a walk in the park. I believe that the one thing that differentiated me from the more capable quant jocks is that I spent plenty of quality time with the text.

If this is your textbook, you've got a good one. Use it well and good luck.

BTW, my one complaint is that the shiny paper reflects into your eyes under fluorescent lighting. Too bad almost all publishers, including this one, feel compelled to go with the glossy paper.

Very difficult to comprehend

I've noticed that the majority of reviews of this textbook only address issues related to shipment and the condition of the book upon arrival. But what about content? It's awful. Really. Who wants a math book that reads like a textbook. I've taken a few algebra classes this year and this is my first stats class. The algebra books contained multitudes of clear examples with step by step instructions. This book has long, complicated text-only paragraphs that you have to re-read multiple times and then they fail to provide many (there are a few, but very lacking)illustrated examples of HOW to arrive at the answer. This sort of book needs to be supplemented by other methods of information (classroom, tutors, Internet) to be really useful. Of course, some of us can't rely on our teachers to help, as the quality of professors varies about as much as textbooks!! It CANNOT stand on its own most of the time. Very hard to grasp. Two thumbs down.

About the Author

Jennifer Greene, has spent the past 15 years or so building software for many different kinds of companies. She's worked for small start-ups and some huge companies along the way. She's built software test teams and helped lots of companies diagnose and deal with habitual process problems so that they could build better software. Since her start in software test and process definition, she's branched out into development management and project management. She's currently managing a big development team for a global media company and she's managed just about every aspect of software development through her career.

Jennifer founded Stellman & Greene Consulting with Andrew Stellman in 2003, initially to serve the scientific and academic community. They have worked in a wide range of industries including finance, telecommunications, media, non-profit, entertainment, natural language processing, science and academia. They do speaking engagements, provide training on development practices, manage teams, and build software. Together, they've written two highly acclaimed books on project management (Head First PMP and Applied Software Project Management), Head First C#, and most recently just finished up Beautiful Teams.

Andrew Stellman, despite being raised a New Yorker, has lived in Pittsburgh twice. The first time was when he graduated from Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science, and then again when he and Jenny were starting their consulting business and writing their first project management book for O'Reilly. When he moved back to his hometown, his first job after college was as a programmer at EMI-Capitol Records--which actually made sense, since he went to LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts to study cello and jazz bass guitar. He and Jenny first worked together at that same financial software company, where he was managing a team of programmers. He's since managed various teams of software engineers, requirements analysts, and led process improvement efforts. Andrew keeps himself busy eating an enormous amount of string cheese and Middle Eastern desserts, playing music (but video games even more), studying taiji and aikido, having a girlfriend named Lisa, and owing a pomeranian. Just passed PMP Exam

I'm a baby boomer who just passed the PMP exam on the first try. I couldn't see spending $2,500 for one of those boot camp courses, so I bought three books from Amazon, printed my copy of the PMBOK, and started my self-study program.

For exam prep purposes, Head First Pmp: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam was by far the best. The approach is a little unusual, but the combination of pictures, humor and active exercises really works to help you learn the material. The practice exercises and the full 200 question test were challenging enough to make the real exam seem relatively easy. You can also take the practice test online if you want.

For the purpose of self-studying for the exam, I'd have to give this book top ratings. It definitely helped me.

This should be the first book that you read in preparing for the PMP exam!

I just passed the PMP exam -- 4th edition of the PMBOK based. The test does require quite a bit of preparation. I have many years of project management experience, so I have a strong practical background. The PMBOK covers a very large body of material which is summarized at a high level in the PMBOK. You must have a combination of practical experience and extensive book knowledge of the PMBOK to pass the exam.

I would start with this book before reading the PMBOK material. The approach in the book is very effective and gives you a very solid overview of the key PMBOK items. After studying this book and doing the practice test in the back, I would then suggest that you go over the PMBOK 4th edition several times followed by doing a lot of practice tests. Practice tests are critical so you can figure out how to properly interpret what the question is asking.

Appoach:

The book uses a series of techniques -- stories, use cases, crossword puzzles, flash card type quizzes (a range of memonic tricks). It may seem a bit odd but it does really work. The reason why I say start with this book is that you need to have solid overview of all the subject areas and processes before you try to connect lots of detailed information that makes up the PMBOK knowledge space.

There are many other books out there to study for the PMP exam. But, if the book does not take a top-down approach, you can very quickly get confused with the PMBOK terminology and processes.

There is a large amount of information available on the internet. When you are taking the practice tests, you should make a list of any terms you are not familiar with and then look them up later. This is a very helpful way to get a feel for the scope and level of detail that you need to know about items defined in the PMBOK and project management world.

Unorthodox but effective.

[...]. Before you look at it, I'd like to mention that this title being reviewed, Head First PMP, helped me.

I went through four books: Rita Mulcahy's, Kim Heldman's, Andy Crowe's, and Head First PMP.

Mulchay's book just turned me off. I did not appreciate being talked down to by the self-proclaimed *itch goddess. Sure it contains some good content but: (1) her book is cluttered, (2) her tone is dismissive, and (3) the title was not edited professionally. You can pass the PMP without having to put up with her *rap.

Heldman's isn't bad. Both authors are women but while Mulcahy is the kind you'll wish you never met, Heldman is sweet and kindly in her tone. Both women know their stuff but Kim knows how to present it in an inoffensive manner.

Crowe was highly recommended and as I discovered, rightfully so. It has a companion website that was useful.

And then there's Head First PMP! It employs an unorthodox style but it works. It is an effective learning book. The magnet exercises are useful. The "there are no dumb questions" columns contain insightful questions. And so forth. To be sure, I found that some parts of it were "corny." In my opinion, those parts did not contribute enough to justify their presence. Generally speaking however, the title was well-written and well-edited.

Like I said, for the first couple of years, as long as you workout consistently, and progressively heavier, you will be able to get bigger. However, after a while, simply lifting heavier weights is not a novel enough stimulus to trigger the body into adding more muscle . Not only that, but this is a very “narrow” approach to training that leaves various pathways to hypertrophy (muscle growth) completely untouched, and your full potential entirely untapped! Most people focus only on training the Type II muscle fibers because they have the greatest potential for hypertrophy. However, to reach the outer boundaries of our genetic limit, we need to train every single fiber along the continuum, from the slowest of the slow, to the fastest of the fast. In addition, we must make a conscious and relentless effort to positively affect every metabolic and hormonal system that can contribute to advancing our muscle size and density. And dare I mention the word hyperplasia (muscle cell splitting)? Correct, never proven in humans, but evidence proves that the possibility certainly exists!

PRRS is outstanding

If you are at a sticking point with your resistance training, PRRS will definitely catapult you through it. My workouts were stagnating and routine, but PRRS drove home the value of attacking my workout with varying degrees of intensity and tempo. The author is insightful, intelligent, and has an encouraging and supportive style of presenting his training method. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to reinvigorate their trips to the gym. Good luck during the SHOCK phase, you are going to need it!

Insight Soothes My Compulsion to Know

Emily Dickinson: a favorite author of mine since fifth grade, when a substitute teacher exposed the class to Dickinson poetry. She said that Dickinson "became a hermit because something very personal happened to her."
Since I was eleven years old, I have been wondering what happened to Dickinson, why she isolated herself. What is so personal that a teacher would not share, even to educate the class? Maybe she was making it up, and she didn't know, herself? On and off I have consulted biographies, but never felt satisfied that I knew the secret, had the insight.
Dr. Kavaler-Adler, starting with your book, "The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and Their Demon Lovers," you explain Dickinson's psychological and spiritual development and arrest, and how it informed her life and work. Thank you for finally solving the mystery of Dickinson for me with your keen insight, deep reasoning, and clear explanations.
