We all know these perceptions exist, but have failed to address them because it might be disruptive or uncomfortable. The problem is that these beliefs become even more engrained in corporate memory when they are allowed to persist. HR, as a profession, must address its past before it can move forward to make greater contributions in the future. Five specific historical perceptions about HR are addressed and examined in terms of the latest evidence and research. • HR Doesn’t Add Value to the Business • HR is Siloed and Too Inwardly Focused • HR is a Weak Discipline with Poor Tools • HR Measures are Too Soft and Subjective • HR is a Stodgy, Dead-end Career Once the past myths have been reconciled, there are many serious issues to be addressed. There are four key steps that must be taken before HR can drive the business forward. First, HR professionals must develop a greater diversity of skills and abilities. HR must “get better” and continually strive to improve in such a fast-changing world. Old skills and approaches will not suffice. Second, HR professionals need to expand and grow their professional networks as this becomes essential to developing capabilities and having access to the wisdom of others. Third, HR has very real levers to improve the business through better alignment, cost savings and productivity improvements. These levers need to be used in a balanced fashion, not simply through reductions in force or removing programs to save money. And fourth, the HR profession needs to speak with a strong point of view, a new confidence, with perhaps even with swagger. HR’s purpose is to drive business results. It is that simple, and yet that difficult. Part of HR’s struggles for years has been the ambiguity over its roles and responsibilities that has then led to different perceptions of its effectiveness. A clear articulated purpose, however, contributes to sharper focus, better alignment, stronger prioritization, improved professional confidence, and less distraction. The Fearless HR story—confronting past perceptions, seizing opportunities and driving business results-- is actually quite liberating.

About the Author
David C Forman is the President of Sage Learning Systems and former Chief Learning Officer of The Human Capital Institute. The courses he has developed and taught for HCI have been taken by thousands of HR professionals all over the world. In 2002, David worked with SHRM to create materials to support the GPHR certification program. Prior to these experiences, David spent 25 years in the training industry, working with large global organizations to improve the knowledge, skills and performance of their people. Major clients include FedEx, IBM, DuPont, Microsoft, SAP, American Express, PwC, Ford, Prudential, Apple, Scripps Healthcare, Allstate Insurance and the University of Farmers. In 1984, David had the unique opportunity to work with Apple on the release of the Macintosh; and several years later to help IBM streamline and cross-train over 22,000 manufacturing employees. David has written more than 40 articles on talent management, analytics, strategic human resources, learning systems, high-performance cultures and leadership. He has also spoken at many national and global talent and leadership conferences, both in his role of hosting HCI’s conferences for many years but also as a key note speaker.

Dave Forman sets the stage for rewiring the thinking around HR. With great clarity he paints the historical issues and shortcomings of HR, the needed vision for the future, and the importance of driving the business agenda. The icing on the cake is that he then gives us tools to accomplish this work!

An instruction manual for making HR relevant - beware if you're not ready to be challenged!

David has written the definitive book for HR leaders who are truly looking to be relevant to the businesses they support by realizing the results the businesses need. David's perspective - HR leaders must be - first & foremost - business focused, understanding the strategies, tactics, and initiatives that drive the most significant business outcomes. From that position, HR can truly begin to fashion aligned strategies, initiatives, and programs that will help mitigate the business' risks and maximize the business' people impact.

David doesn't shy away from the current perceptions of HR, but wades deep into the beliefs of many who argue that HR doesn't add value to the businesses support, HR is too siloed, and is a "dead end" career plagued with inadequate tools & a lack of measurable impact. In the back half of the book, David shares the anecdote for HR's malaise - strong capabilities, rich networking & communities, the right levers, and a fearless mindset.

This is - to me - a must-read for every HR practitioner who is seeking to realize better outcomes & the respect of their professional peers.

Driving Business Results...an excellent Blueprint from slogan to Reality!

Fearless HR is a great book! I would suggest to anyone in business who needs a further understanding of how to drive business results to buy this book. David Forman develops, in a compelling manner the different 'time zones'; describing, the PAST and the evolution of HR; the PRESENT…now, where HR is poised to make a preemptive move...and, the FUTURE with boundless opportunities. Forward-looking he lays out various levers that could be used to truly make a difference. It is an encouraging book!
The book has a strategic and operational perspective if one is interested in improving services. For the practitioner there is solid advice and a number of tools that can be used day-one; again, focusing on driving business results!
The necessity for HR to truly be a leader of change, driving business results is a universal business mantra. David Forman provides an excellent blueprint for the path forward to make this a reality, rather than a slogan!
Buy this book--it is well worth it!
