Still the Best Guide for Vascular Plants in the Florida Panhandle.

I've been a practicing plant taxonomist for 24 years, and this was one of the first manuals I used...and the best. This manual remains - nearly 30 years after first published - the best guide for keying out the plants of the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Georgia, hands down. Prior to its publication, there was no functional guide for vascular plants in this area of some 2500 species. Small's 1933 manual for the SE is a great book, but its scope makes it difficult to use. Andy Clewell & his students produced a wonderful work that still stands out amidst the countless "pop" botany books that saturate the market.

Many of Clewell's keys use vegetative features, because you don't always find the plant in flower or fruit. Updates of recent new names can be found in Wunderlin's book (which can be difficult sometimes because of the preponderance of using reproductive (fruit, flower) features vs. vegetative. Clewell's book is now out of print...it is already valuable because of that and will only increase in value.
