About the Author
Rachel McKibbens was born in Ahaheim, California. She is a member and co-founder of the Right Coast Writers Brigade. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including World Literature Today, The New York Quarterly, and Bowery Women: Poems. Among other honors, she is a 2007 New York Foundation of the Arts Poetry Fellow, a Pushcart nominee, and the 2009 Women's Individual World Poetry Slam champion. She has read her work at universities, schools, galleries, and various other venues across the nation. She teaches poetry and creative writing across the country at all levels. An ex-punk rock chola with five children, Rachel lives in upstate New York with writer Jacob Rakovan and four of their children. She is the author of PINK ELEPHANT (Cypher Books, 2009) and INTO THE DARK & EMPTYING FIELD (Small Doggies Press, 2013).

"When grief takes hold, you monster through it."

The poems in this book can be brutal. Rachel McKibbens is well known in the world of slam, a tradition that values maximum impact, and movement. That's what her poems do. They hit. And they tell stories economically and fiercely. But, far from the unadorned first-person narratives people sometimes associate with slam, they are sophisticated, rich in images that carry specific tactile and visual and symbolic power, and precise in their language choices.
The subject matters of the poems in this book include lust, infidelity, vengeance, and predation. There are broken children. There are all the various forms that loneliness takes (spurned love, widowhood, motherlessness), and always the yearning for tenderness and connection.
Some are explicit and some hard to read, but images that start by assaulting often crack open to reveal another layer of possibility. This quality of surprise, along with the lusciousness of the language itself, promises a kind of redemption. Her world is a knife-edged and a dark one, but never static, and because there is constant transformation, there is always hope.
In a recent interview at Tin House, McKibbens said, "My life has always been a fairytale. More Grimm than Mother Goose." That quote captures an essential feeling conveyed by the poems in this book and the landscape they describe. As far as I remember, there are no pet goats being cut open, or birds pecking sisters' eyes out here, but there may as well be. Magic and violence and animals and images of transformation are abundant. In that regard, her debt to Anne Sexton is clear. If you like her stuff, I bet you'll like this.

a cultural touchstone

rachel mckibbens is the top drawer of young women writing about their childhood experiences. her poetry is not for the faint of heart, or the gentility who prefer to act as if only perfectly polite things happen in life. mckibbens gives voice to the horrific experiences of the invisible with breathtaking beauty. i followed her for years on facebook. she is a power to be reckoned with. we will hear from her for years. she is the leader of a new and wonderful group of feminists, full of passion and skill, creating stories of consequence.

With the turn of every page went on an emotional Journey! Hard to pick a few favorites each poem is that great and I went back and read most of them twice before I even finished the book. This is definitely a keeper in my collection.
