Entertaining and insightful.

I know the author, so my reading of his work is naturally colored by personal perspective. Wrestling with Angels is an interesting collection of elements, beginning with a narrative of the years following MacLennon’s service in the U.S. Navy which is detailed in his previous book God, Bombs, Sex & Nam. There’s a compact selection of poetry, and finally, prose pieces ranging from accounts of life events to philosophical discussion. I have long admired MacLennon’s creativity, and his books have helped me to understand how he became the man I know. We are contemporaries, although I’m not a Vietmam veteran. Nonetheless, while reading Gerry’s books, I often found myself thinking that my reactions to various situations would likely have been similar to his. MacLennon’s writing is pleasantly conversational, and I believe that many readers, especially those born relatively early in the post-war baby boom, will appreciate his honesty and easy style. I recommend reading God, Bombs, Sex & Nam first for background, but “Angels” stands very well on its own.

About the Author
Robert Forsyth has studied the history and operations of the Luftwaffe for many years. He is the author of JV 44 - The Galland Circus (1996), Battle over Bavaria - The B-26 versus the German Jets (1998), Mistel - German Composite Aircraft and Operations 1942-1945 (2001), Messerschmitt Me 264 Amerikabomber (2006 - with Eddie J Creek) and He 162 Volksjäger (2008 - with Eddie J Creek). For Osprey Publishing, he had written Jagdverband 44 and Jagdgeschwader 7 (Elite Units); Fw 190 vs B-17 (Duel); Aces of the Legion Condor and Luftwaffe Viermot Aces (Aces); and Me 262 Bomber and Reconnaissance Units (Combat Aircraft). new material on a rare Luftwaffe subject - classic Osprey!

I really like the 'make-over' given to these new-look Osprey Aces/Combat Aircraft titles. Yes, Osprey have finally done away with that line that runs down most of the pages and some pictures now go all the way across the page and are reproduced to a reasonable size ..yes, revolutionary I know!
Mr Forsyth has already produced the seminal work on the Mistel for his own Classic Publications, a title that is now as rare as hens' teeth and sells for mega-bucks on ebay. So, as Robert put it, Osprey 'twisted his arm' and got him to compile this nice little summary of the whole Mistel story. In the meantime and elsewhere I had been in touch with Mistel project engineer and test pilot Horst-Dieter Lux - who received little or no mention in Robert's first opus. He had apparently proved difficult to trace but in fact after being courted by the British and the Russians at the end of the war, Lux - who had been on Baumbach's KG 200 staff - went to the US, worked for Lockheed and was a 'big cheese' on the Starfighter programme. He was featured in the Lockheed company newspaper around about the time of the Space Shuttle programme - remember it was transported around on the back of a 747. Of course Lux has passed away now ..but I just happened to have some of his papers and personal accounts he wrote from that time which I forwarded to Mr Forsyth for this Osprey title. From the credits it seems other enthusiasts have done likewise with other 'personalities' in the Mistel story, so from that point of view I can certainly recommend you pick up this new Osprey title as it does feature 'new' material. Robert is a consummate writer and the story is exceptionally well told.

It was called "MISTEL."

Despite the passage of 70 years since the end of the Second World War, there are still incredible stories from that conflict that are either overlooked or unknown by the general public. The story of the Luftwaffe Mistel Composite Bomber Units is a case in point.

The 'Mistel' (mistletoe) program developed by the Luftwaffe in September 1942 was a revolutionary concept whose roots extended back to 1927 when the German aircraft designer Hugo Junkers filed a patent for a design in which "a flying machine is placed on or connected with another flying machine of some suitable type, which serves for imparting to the machine to be started an additional acceleration and, if desired, to support it in the air until a predetermined altitude has been attained. The aircraft to be started is supported by another flying machine."

This book goes to considerable lengths in explaining how the 'Mistel' program - which began with tests involving a Focke Wulf 56 single-seat fighter trainer "riding atop", via a means of a series of support trusses, a DFS 230 glider - perfected the feasibility of developing a "flying bomb" that could be successfully guided onto a heavily defended target (such as an Allied ship or specialized artillery emplacements). Indeed, as the program evolved from theory to experimentation to actual field testing in early 1944, both the Focke Wulf 56 and DFS 230 glider were replaced with the combo of the ME 109F fighter perched atop specialized twin-engined Junkers 88 bombers, whose cockpits were displaced with a special high explosive warhead. Once aloft, the pilot of the ME 109F could guide the Junkers 88 to its assigned target, detach itself from the Junkers 88 which would impact the target with a massive detonation, leaving the ME 109F pilot free to attack any other inviting targets and fly home. Later, the Focke Wulf 190 fighter would also be combined with the Junkers 88 bomber to further augment the 'Mistel' program.

'Mistel' units first went into action against Allied shipping over Normandy in July 1944. It had little effect upon the battle there. Subsequently, as German forces were pushed back to the frontiers of the Reich in the latter part of 1944 and into the spring of 1945, 'Mistel' units were deployed in various actions against Soviet forces along the Oder and Vistula Rivers, and against American forces advancing over the Rhine River.

What I also found illuminating about this book are the many personal accounts from some of the pilots and technicians who were a part of 'Mistel'. There are also lots of fantastic photos and illustrations. For anyone wanting to know more about 'Mistel', this is the best place to start.

Fascinating in some chapters, dull in others

Danielou's examination of how the early church fathers interpreted the Old Testament is a book of uneven quality in my opinion. I waffled on whether to give the book 3 or 4 stars, so 3.5 is probably what it deserves. The book lays out in detail several examples of Old Testament typology, focusing on the first 6 books of the Bible, Genesis through Joshua. Typology is essentially the study of how Old Testament people, places, themes, and events foreshadow or outline New Testament realities in a prophetic or 'typical' way. For example the crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites is a type of the future reality of Baptism, whereby Christians are washed clean from their slavery to sin (cf. slavery in Egypt). The actual content and interpretations in typology that Danielou provides is quite good. I especially enjoyed the section on Rahab as a type of the Church, and the comparision of Adam and Christ. The parts of the book that really dragged, and were uninteresting was Danielou's rather wordy descriptions of what the church father's meant, and the sections that dealt with allegories. It was helpful, however, that Danielou spent some time distinguishing allegory (which he rejects) and the hermeneutics of typology. But, he did this multiple times, and the example of the allegory of the ark should have been enough to get his point across. Overall I enjoyed the insight that came from quoting his sources, but I didn't find Danielou's commentary very interesting. Some chapters on allegory in particular are worth skipping altogether.

Biblical typology is almost a lost art to many Christians who are unfamiliar with the writings of the early Church Fathers or the great Saints of the Middle Ages, all of whom were steeped in the mystical tradition. It was critical to the early Church Fathers to demonstrate the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Messiah which fill the Old Testament and to show how the "types" of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the sacraments given to the Church by Christ. Some examples are the Mystagogical Lectures of St. Cyril of Jerusalem or De Mysteriis and De Sacramentis by St. Ambrose. It is also important to recognize that understanding the liturgy more fully is not possible without understanding the biblical typology upon which it rests.

Origen and the Alexandrian School of Scriptural interpretation especially brought out the spiritual richness of the developing tradition, which goes back to the Jewish scholar Philo. However, even the more literally focused Antioch School spoke of types, though their interpretation differed. For example, the Antiochian school saw the water from the rock in the desert as a type of Eucharist (which comes from the Pauline tradition), while the Alexandrian school saw it as a type of Baptism (from the Johannine tradition). Yet as Danielou notes "we meet an agreement of all schools upon the fundamental types." Thus, he can conclude, "This proves that we are face to face with something which is part and parcel of the deposit of Revelation."

The chapters tell the story of the richness of the biblical typology presented, which only skims the surface of all that the Scriptures hold: Book I: Adam and Paradise; Book II: Noah and the Flood; Book III: The Sacrifice of Isaac; Book IV: Moses and the Exodus; Book V: The Cycle of Joshua. Cardinal Danielou does not have time to explore the history of the origins of typological exegesis but what he gives us is rich fare indeed. This receives my highest recommendation for those seeking to deepen their faith in Jesus Christ.

Essential Reading for Medievalists

Jean Daniélou, a Jesuit priest made Cardinal by Paul VI, was a theologian and one if the architects of Vatican II. He was also the author of works on the history of patristic theology and exegesis and the liturgy, which earned him fauteuil 32 in the Académie Française. His book on biblical typology, Sacramentum futuri; études sur les origines de la typologie biblique (Paris: Beauchesne, 1950) was translated into English in 1960 by a fellow Jesuit, Wulstan Hibberd, under the title From Shadows to Reality. This study remains to this day at the top of the list of must-read works on the subject, along with Henri de Lubac"s Exégèse médievale: Les Quatre Sens de l'Écriture and La théologie au douzieme siecle, (Paris, Vrin 1957) by M.D. Chenu. Possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of patristics, Daniélou condenses thousands of pages early Christian exegetical texts, which range from the brilliant to the banal, into a short, concise survey useful to scholars and yet accessible to the (educated) general reader. The sections on allegory are important as they bring out the rhetorical dimension of the typological figura and allow one to see how typology was not just a collection of Old and New Testament parallels, but a full-blown epistemology that permeated all aspects of medieval writing on almost any subject. As such, From Shadows to Reality is essential reading for all medievalists.

Apart from their real merits, Daniélou's book, along with those of Lubac and Chenu, are still essential reading on the subject of biblical typology because no major works on the subject have been published since the 1950s. The price of a reprint of the 1960 translation ($200) is not going to gain Daniélou's book many new admirers.

Of related interest is Philippe Buc's L'Ambiguite du Livre: Prince, pouvoir, et peuple dans les commentaires de la Bible au Moyen Age (Paris, 1994), which examines with the social, political and ideological dimensions of the medieval biblical commentaries and glosses.

It is an interesting book. Relatively easy to read. Well organized. It would be nice to have more examples. Lists are good but they need to be substantiated. I also found the appendices to be nearly useless. There are many many pages of appendices and they really do not serve any purpose. It would be better just to delete those pages and give us a cheaper price. I bet we paid a lot for those appendices. So yes the price is high. I would liked to have seen many more diagrams. The ones present are helpful. The book needs editing in some sections. Overall, I give it a 3.5.

Zum Beispiel würden bei einem Wechsel eines Beschäftigten zwischen dem öffentlichen Dienst und einer privatrechtlich organisierten Forschungseinrichtung das 13. Gehalt als Weihnachtsgeld verloren gehen oder auch Beschäftigungszeiten nicht anerkannt werden.
Ebenfalls stellten sich Schwierigkeiten bei der Überprüfungspflicht nach dem Stasi-Unterlagen-Gesetz durch die "Gauck-Behörde" ein. Obwohl eigentlich kein sachlicher Grund für eine Differenzierung zwischen öffentlich-rechtlichen und den privatrechtlichen Forschungseinrichtungen in diesem Punkt vorliegt, erfolgt die Überprüfung nicht in gleicher Weise wie beim Staatsdienst.
Vor allem aber wegen den zuerst genannten Gründen, besteht ein starkes Interesse der Mitarbeiter von privatrechtlich organisierten Wissenschaftseinrichtungen, zum öffentlichen Dienst gezählt zu werden.
Ausgehend von der Frage, ob außeruniversitäre 'staatliche' Forschungseinrichtungen zum "öffentlichen Dienst" gehören, sind zunächst die Begriffsmerkmale des öffentlichen Dienstes zu bestimmen.
