About the Author
Dr. Tawfik Abdo Saleh is a faculty member in the Chemistry Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He has published several papers in international refereed journals and conference proceedings, has authored and edited several books and book chapters, and he is a member of several local and international scientific societies. He has supervised many graduate students. His expertise includes, but is not limited to, the synthesis, design, and preparation of materials, nanomaterials, nanocomposites, and hybrid materials and their applications. His expertise also includes materials characterization using various techniques.

Dr. Vinod Kumar Gupta is Professor of Chemistry at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee, India, and is currently working as SARCHI Chair Professor in the Applied Chemistry Department at the University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa. He has published more than 500 papers with 37,000 citations and an h-index of 127. He is editor of many journals and is on the editorial board of more than 20 international journals. He has more than 30 years of research experience in environmental engineering, electro-analytical chemistry, chemical sensors, and waste management.

Purchased this book for my grandson so that he could get an idea about where I live. The book was well written and the illustrations were very nice.

Adorable illustrations, but title should be, "Hello, Central and South Florida!"

I bought this book in our local state history museum gift shop. The book opens with Miami Beach and closes with Cocoa Beach. What about the Capitol Building? St. Marks? Pensacola? Just as the rest of the world thinks of Florida as nothing but beach bums, manatees, and MIAMI-DADE, so too do most children's book authors. Otherwise, it is sweet. No great amount of text, but the cute illustrations offer plenty to talk about. In fact, the third star is for the art. The main character is a little girl, so if that will bother your son, skip this book. Mayhem doesn't mind, as long as the story keeps moving, and this one doesn't really do that. He may be a bit beyond this book, but it will be okay for an 18-36 m.o., and will even look cute on display in a little girl's nursery.

I live and grew up outside of Pensacola, Florida. My Granddaughter brought me this book to read to her. I thought it was very cute until I got to the end and realized Ms Tomasello had left out the Capital and the panhandle of Florida. I know she could not mention all of the cities in Florida, but to completely ignore us inexcusable. She left out Tallahassee!!

A rollercoaster ride of romance, revenge, and Revolution

Alice Roussillon is a surprising heroine considering this book was published way back in 1900. Living in the then French village of Vincennes, Alice is all for turning over the city to the Americans. She even helps sew an American flag and brashly climbs to the top of what serves as town hall to plant it.

But then those pesky villains, the British army, come and take the city away from the fledgling American presence. Alice just keeps getting in deeper and deeper trouble. First she hides the flag and refuses to surrender it to the British commander. Then she shoots (but doesn't kill) a British officer (who strangely enough goes on to fall in love with her.) She helps her French foster father escape, wounding another British soldier with her sword, which she handles expertly by the way. Enough is enough and the commander finally imprisons Alice and threatens to execute her.

Alice's American boyfriend flees to try and find help. He's chased by a band of Indians who want his scalp. He's captured, abused, and forced to go through the gauntlet, but he's able to get away and hook up with the legendary George Rogers Clark and his small band of men.

Meanwhile, Alice is told that her boyfriend has been scalped. She attempts to flee her captives and in the course of events she's shot! But don't worry. Through an extreme set of circumstances she survives and is reunited with her boyfriend who still has all his hair.

If there's one main nitpick it concerns the character of Father Beret, a Jesuit priest. One moment he's a kind old man trying to guide Alice to Catholicism. But when the situation calls for it, he's a strong defender with a good right punch who can also wield a sword with the best of them. Early in the book he receives a mysterious letter but we the reader never do get to learn what it says. It's obvious Beret has an interesting back story, but author Maurice Thompson never goes into it. A wasted opportunity if you ask me.

Another missed opportunity is Alice's background. She was found as a child living with Indians and was placed in the care of a French family. At the very end of the book we're simply told that she finds out who her family is but we're not told how. How did she end up living with the Indians? What happened to her birth parents? Again, Thompson just drops the subject.

One last thing: don't expect any politically correct language when it comes to the Native Americans in this book. Keep in mind the era when this book was written.

Historical fiction

I always try to read a book that is set in a location where I plan to travel. Historical fiction gives me a sense of the land and how the area started and has grown. It gives me a different perspective when I am there. This book was slow at the start, but soon became interesting.

About the Author

Katheryn Russell-Brown is the Chesterfield Smith Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations at the University of Florida, Levin College of Law.  Professor Russell-Brown received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, law degree from the University of California, Hastings, and Ph.D. in criminology from the University of Maryland.  Prior to joining the University of Florida law faculty in 2003, Professor Russell-Brown taught in the Criminology and Criminal Justice department at the University of Maryland for 11 years.  She has been a visiting law professor at American University and the City University of New York (CUNY).  She has been a lecturer at Howard University and her first teaching position was at Alabama State University.  Professor Russell-Brown teaches, researches, and writes on issues of race and crime and the sociology of law.  Her article, "The Constitutionality of Jury Override in Alabama Death Penalty Cases," was cited in the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Harris v. Alabama (1995).  In 2009, Professor Russell-Brown was awarded a Soros Justice Advocacy Fellowship.  Her project focused on ways to integrate criminal justice issues into the elementary education curriculum.  Professor Russell-Brown’s work includes the textbook Criminal Law (Sage, 2016) (co-authored with Angela J. Davis) and books, The Color of Crime, 2d edition (New York University Press, 2009), Protecting Our Own: Race, Crime and African Americans, (Rowman and Littlefield, 2006), and Underground Codes: Race, Crime, and Related Fires (New York University Press, 2004).

Angela J. Davis is a professor of Law at the American University Washington College of Law where she teaches Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Criminal Defense: Theory and Practice. Professor Davis has been a Visiting Professor at George Washington University Law School and Georgetown University Law Center. She has served on the adjunct faculty at George Washington, Georgetown, and Harvard Law Schools. Professor Davis is the author of Arbitrary Justice: The Power of the American Prosecutor (Oxford University Press, 2007), the co-editor of Trial Stories (with Professor Michael E. Tigar) (Foundation Press, 2007), and a co-author of the 6th edition of Basic Criminal Procedure (with Professors Stephen Saltzburg and Daniel Capra) (Thomson West 2012). Professor Davis’ other publications include articles and book chapters on prosecutorial discretion and racism in the criminal justice system. Professor Davis received the American University Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching in a Full-Time Appointment in 2002, the American University Faculty Award for Outstanding Scholarship in 2009, and the Washington College of Law’s Pauline Ruyle Moore award for scholarly contribution in the area of public law in 2000 and 2009. Professor Davis’ book Arbitrary Justice won the Association of American Publishers 2007 Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division Award for Excellence in the Law and Legal Studies Division. She was awarded a Soros Senior Justice Fellowship in 2004. Professor Davis is a graduate of Howard University and Harvard Law School. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Sentencing Project and the Southern Center for Human Rights.Professor Davis served as the Executive Director of the National Rainbow Coalition from 1994 - 1995. From 1991 - 1994, she was the Director of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (“PDS”). She also served as the Deputy Director from 1988 – 1991 and as a staff attorney at PDS from 1982 – 1988, representing indigent juveniles and adults charged with crimes. Professor Davis is a former law clerk of the Honorable Theodore R. Newman of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
