I enjoyed these. The economy of language, the importance of every word, the significance of every punctuation mark, and the ironic turn at the end of each story felt like poetry. Although it is difficult to summarize such an eclectic range of voices and narrative points-of-view, I will try anyway with my fifty-fifth word: beautiful.

A lot of good information about how to look at problems and make plans to overcome them

SUMMARY: This is the updated and second edition of this book. The authors use CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) as the basis of their work. This book takes a patient through a process from understanding his own problems, to assessing the severity of the problems. Then the reader is taught how to recognize his own moods during situations and to rate them. The reader is also taught to assess thoughts about situations and to look at their believability. There are chapters on anxiety and depression. The book is designed in such a way that you can skip chapters based on your own needs. And there are tons of worksheets to work through to assess your problems, beliefs about your problems, and then to make action plans to overcome.

THE GOOD: I have to start by saying, as a right brained person, I am not a fan of CBT. However, the authors have put a lot of good information out there in this book about how to examine problems, see them for what they really are, and how to question underlying negative beliefs. There is a lot of information presented in this book, but if you are determined to learn how to deal with your problems in a systematic way, this book will provide you with the tools.
THE NOT AS GOOD: This is not a quick fix. The authors present a long process that can be successful, but you have to be willing to put the time in. This book would be best done with a licensed therapist as a guide or in group therapy. I cannot recommend this book for self-help for those in highly distressing situations. In those cases, I would recommend a therapist use the book to guide the patient.

Get this in paperback, as the Kindle version is hard to read and you can't use the worksheets. The book and the concept is very helpful overall and I have learned a lot about how to impact my own mood.

I used the first edition with my patients for many years. It helped them to understand cognitive therapy and to develop the skills they needed to implement the changes they needed to make. As an adjunct to therapy they were able to go faster and make more permanent changes. I was excited to learn that the new edition was soon to be published and ordered it immediately. After a thorough review of the new book I believe the updates and the new chapters make it even better.

About the Author
Ken Kollman is Professor in the Department of Political Science and Research Professor in the Center for Political Studies in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research and teaching focus on political parties, elections, lobbying, and federal systems. He also regularly teaches the introductory American politics course at the University of Michigan. In addition to numerous articles, he has written The Formation of National Party Systems: Federalism and Party Competition in Canada, Great Britain, India, and the United States (with Pradeep Chhibber), and Outside Lobbying: Public Opinion and Interest Group Strategies.

Thorough Book

This book is so thorough that when I read it I didn't feel like I needed to show up to class because the prof didn't cover half of it but tested on all of it.

I'm not condoning skipping class!! I am saying that this might be a book you want as reference after you take this class.

A Pro Right There with You - If you want to get the camera up and running with the feeling of a pro right there with you then I would strongly recommend it. He walks you through setting the camera up and gives you his reasoning for the settings. He leaves the door open to change them based on your level of experience. After the basic settings tour Doug then gets down to the heart of this great camera: the custom settings and focus system. His explanation is first class and he explains how various custom settings are related to each other. All in all a great read.  Camera in one hand and reader in the other and dig in.

There is Always Something New to Learn

I have been shooting Canon cameras for years...and just upgraded to the 6D from a 50D. I almost didn't purchase the book because I figured the 6D couldn't be that different, right? But then I thought - it is a small investment relative to the price of the 6D, and maybe I would learn something new. And indeed I did! Doug Klostermann's book helped me understand every feature and menu item on my new camera...as well as enlightening me on many similar features on my 50D. I found the chapters on how the camera auto-focuses and the various exposure modes particularly helpful. I think I finally understand why I would sometimes get wildly different exposure results when I was re-framing compositions. The chapter on customizing the camera buttons has given me a whole new approach to my new camera. These were features that were available to me on my 50D, but I never knew how to use them to my advantage, or why I would want to change them. The book is well written, and easy to follow - Best read with your camera in your hands so you can try everything out. Klostermann is very good at explaining not only what the feature DOES, but WHY or WHAT SITUATION (or WHY NOT) you would use a particular feature.
The book was definitely was worth the purchase price and the time I invested in reading it. Thanks Doug! I am looking forward to putting it all into practice.

A must for every EOS 6D owner ....

I purchased the PDF version of this e-book from the authors website. I was (I thought) a fairly experienced EOS 60D user when I purchased my 6D camera and purchased the e-book to help me understand the different auto-focusing options on the 6D. However, I found myself learning a lot from this e-book that is applicable to the 60D and the 6D.

We all know that the manuals that come with the cameras are very difficult to read and do not really explain much at all. This book however is excellent, explaining everything you need to know about the camera as well as some photography basics as well. The book is well-written and illustrated throughout with great pictures of the camera, menu screenshots etc as well as example photographs as well.

I would highly recommend this book to every 6D owner.

This is a tremendous tool for 6D owners

Mr. Klostermann's format goes so far beyond what one gets from an owner's manual. His book walks one through all the camera menus and options, and gives real-world applicability to the infinite possibilities this camera is capable of. He gives recommendations as to what he leaves his settings on, excellent explanations as to why, and variations one may wnat depending on useage. Can't recommend this highly enough!!!

About the Author
Dr. Joye Norris has been working with adult educators for more than a decade, helping them to shift from telling to teaching, from hope to evidence, from delivery to discovery.

After studying with Dr. Jane Vella,author of Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach, Joye began sharing her enthusiasm for a dialogue approach to education with thousands of educators across the country. In all cases, the organizations asking for Joye's help were dissatisfied with their current educational efforts which relied heavily on telling and handouts but lacked substantial learner engagement.

Joye has combined her doctorate in Counselor Education from NC State University with her love for adult education and created a refreshing and energizing outlook on learning. She has co-authored two books: Developing Literacy Programs for Homeless Adults and Maximizing Paraprofessional Potential, both published by Krieger.

COMPACT AND COMPREHENSIVE

In this short book, Dr. Joye Norris uses her long experience in adult education to show us a clear route towards learning. Reading this book is like taking a course with her! In an accessible and readable format, Dr. Norris shows teachers and designers of adult learning sessions not only how to, but also why this approach works.
I recommend this book to adult educators, to academics who teach adult education and to designers of training in any field. It will give you a sense of the arduous journey we who are concerned about learning, need to take to move from telling to teaching.

Simple and Effective!

This is a MUST HAVE for presenters/trainers. An easy read packed with simple, powerful and effective training techniques. After years of presenting and training, I've finally found the basic "instuction manual" I've been looking for. Fundamental tips, presented in a way that is simple to grasp and just as easy to apply. Now that I've read this, I'm revising all my training materials. Not only are my presentations more effective and engaging for participants as a result of reading this, but they are much more interesting as a presenter.

Good for non-teachers -- or those not intuitive

I bought this book to help my husband with the workshops he presents, but he told me that I'd gone over everything in it as we'd created the curricula and such for the workshops. (I was both an elementary and high school teacher.)

So if you're not a teacher, married to a teacher (or former teacher), or lack intuitive teaching ability, this book will be really helpful for you. Otherwise, it is a waste of money like it was for us.
