A true JLA adventure: huge and inventive

**This is a review of both Vol. 1 and 2 because it is improbable that someone would intend to read one without the other.**

I originally read this 12-isssue story off the rack back in the 90's. It was great then and still holds up after almost 15 years.

The Good
#1 - The story is weird and wild and big from the first page and wastes no time dragging the entire JLA into what turns out to be one whopper of a story. It ends up spanning 1/2 way around the world and over thousands of years and pits our heroes against variations of themselves that are deadly than they could ever imagine.
#2 - The art is substantially expressive. Doug Mehnke has been a favorite artist of mine for a long time and this story, really shows off his skills. Some people dislike his facial expressions but I say that his style makes characters alive and real more than most other artists in comics
#3 - There is real danger here. Normally, the JLA fights a Big Bad, gets defeated then right before they all get killed some hero has a random out-from-left-field notion on how to win and viola! the villain is defeated. That isn't exactly what happens here as the conclusion to Vol. 1 deftly illustrates.

The Bad
#1 - The story is too big. By the time you reach Vol. 2 the scope of the story stretches to the point of distraction. We end up following two different JLA's in two different time periods with the JLA in current time receiving a different artist whose style is too messy for my taste especially when contrasted with Menhke's line perfection. In fact, you can pretty much skip the story told in the present day and still get a very satisfying experience in both story and art.
#2 - The central plot, and the reason for the title, are convoluted - made more so by the splitting of the story between present and past versions of the JLA in Vol. 2. It took me a lot of thinking to get straight exactly what happened here and I really shouldn't have to work THAT hard to understand what I just read.

Ultimately, I still like The Obsidian Age a lot because the things that I don't like are more meh than bleh and are easy to skip over. leaving me with a grand story I am glad I revisited.

One of the best JLA stories...honest!!!

Okay, first off, I was skeptical about a whole epic story centered around Aquaman who is (in my opinion) not the most interesting JLA character. But I picked up the book anyways, since I enjoy the work of Joe Kelly.
First things first: the plot. Two mysterious travellers (one a shaman Indian and the other an Aztec warrior) have come to destroy the JLA and save the world. Their coming is seen by Green Lantern who is plagued with images of the entire roster of JLA dying in battle. Anyways, the JLA kick the collective butts of these warriors and sends them packing back to their time. But in order to escape, they invoke magic from the past and resurrect Atlantis from the depths of the sea. But the new Atlantis is in ruins and a message of SOS is inscribed by Aquaman (who was thought dead but is stuck in the past). The JLA decides to help their ally and open a portal and travel back to the past. There's just one problem, they don't know how to get back and nobody knows where they are. Before going, Batman senses danger and puts a back-up JLA team in effect (always the thinker) headed by Nightwing and is made up of members from the JSA and others :). I won't say who they are but they are colorful characters. The new JLA goes into action to solve the world's problems in the present while the Old JLA is trying to save Aquaman and Atlantis. And if all that isn't enought, the JLA in ancient times is also facing another league called, the ANCIENTS.
Okay, I'll admit that this is not the easiest plot to understand but it's worth reading. The story is very well-written. Joe Kelly correctly captures the personalities of each members and makes the interactions between them very readable. This book is highly recommended and I really really enjoyed it. I would also recommend getting part two of the Obsidian Age. Trust me, after reading Part I, you'll kick yourself for not getting Part II.
And finally, the art is also pretty good. The art is divided up between two artists. One artist renders the artwork to the New JLA in the modern times and another renders the artwork for the JLA in ancient times. For my money, I like the work of Doug Mahnke who does the ancient JLA portions.

Even with time travel, I liked it

I'm not a fan of time travel stories, but if you don't think about the paradoxes and errors, you can ignore it and have fun. This was an entertaining story. This is a two-parter (as far as graphic novel - it is actually an 11-parter if you go by comic issues). I actually liked the second part better, but since I consider it one story, I give both parts the same rating.

The JLA goes back in time to find out what happened to Aquaman. They actually go back after being attacked by powerful people from the past. While gone and assumed dead, a replacement JLA is created with Nightwing at the lead. I am a Nightwing fan, so enjoyed those parts of the story.

Some things I did not like:
Why did Superman have black around his S instead of yellow (after googling I found out it was his way of mourning those who died in a previous story-line - similar to a black arm band). I was thinking throughout the story it meant a different timeline that would get cleared up at the end. But nope.

What was with the first page and Batman having a cowl but wearing a business suit? That was strange looking (and again, I was thinking different timeline). He was also flirting "heavily" with Wonder Woman. Seemed like a different Batman to me, but no timeline changes.

Also on that first page, Superman smoking a cigar???? Come on, has to be a different timeline. Very strange.

One major gripe. If you read the extras at the end of the book, the author gives away the bag guy, before the story does (which does not happen until the 2nd volume). Really DC? You couldn't have put that text at the end of the 2nd book instead?

Ignore the first page and don't read the extras until after reading book 2, and it was a very good story that if you are a JLA or Nightwing fan, you should read.

Carefully designed and effective language learning

I used this book as part of a semester-long university language class and then again independently to further my progress through the equivalent of another semester. In either usage scenario, it has been the best foreign language textbook I have seen to date.

The combination of textbook, workbook, audio CD, and DVD, all of which are used together for almost every lesson in the book, helps to reinforce concepts and further reading, writing, and listening skills. In the course of each unit, a ~5 minute section of the video, which is a fictional story that follows several young people around their daily activities in Moscow, is shown several times, each with guiding exercises in the book to draw attention to particular phrases or events. The progression of increased understanding from the start to finish of each unit is very satisfying!

The book's organization into "Days", about 9 of them per Unit (with 6 Units total), helps to structure progress. It is also apparent that the authors put considerable thought into subtly repeating vocabulary and grammar concepts within 1-2 lessons after these were initially presented. This built-in repetition is helpful. The book always indicates the proper stressed syllable on words and uses a marking system to show how verb stems will change during their conjugation. There is a grammar analysis section at the end of every unit which gives a comprehensive summary through tables and textual explanations of the concepts that were presented in the course of that unit, which serves as a handy reference.

The only criticism I can think of is that the vocabulary dictionary at the end of the book does not contain every entry given in the list at the end of the units.

This is really the first book I have seen that is both comprehensive enough for university-level grammar courses while also offering enough activities and multimedia aids to allow for self-guided learning. Highly recommended!

Excellent introductory textbook

This is an excellent introductory textbook for Russian. The chapters are already organized in a very logical manner, from day to day activities that build on each other to the overall flow through a semester. This package includes a workbook, listening CD, and accompanying videos on DVD.

The hilariously awkward videos are almost worth the price tag for this book set. Seriously. They are way over-produced and one of the funniest things you'll probably ever see.

Excellent read!

Having grown up with parents who were members in a cult, and having a natural inclination for exposing scams such as the mathematical impossibility of MLM programs, the mechanics of propaganda and brainwashing, initially I didn't think there was anything new I could possibly learn from this book.

Boy, was I was wrong. It turned out to be a fascinating read, and the author has a veritable and pervasive sense of humor throughout. Whether you are a cult member, an "affiliate" who can't figure out "the secret" of success, a freethinker who enjoys a deep look at human nature and how it is exploited, or an evil genius bent on world domination, this book is for you.

Highly recommended!

Great book - well put together, funny, insightful - even if you have no intention of creating a religion, it's an eye opener how he knowingly or unknowingly exposes the bare bones of current religions and their tenants and you see how it really all is a boxed set of conditions and tenets designed to keep the rich richer and the dumb dumber

Picked up the Kindle version a few days ago and read it in one sitting. Super funny take on organized religion - an enjoyable read all around. Definately sparked a lot on conversation at a party this weekend that led to some ordering the book from their smart phones while still at the party. Definately recommend ths book.

About the Author
IONA (b. 1923) and PETER OPIE (1918-1982) began their research together in 1944. Fifteen years later, they published The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren and took their places as, to quote The Guardian, "the supreme archivists of the folklore movement." Since that time, they have jointly published The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, The Classic Fairy Tales, and Children’s Game in Street and Playground. Since Peter Opie’s death in 1982, Iona Opie has carried on with their work under his name as well as her own.

As entertaining as anthropology gets

LORE AND LANGUAGE OF SCHOOLCHILDREN is one of two books I found about out while doing late-night Wikipedia searches on a random rhyme I remembered from when I was a kid. Being a lover of history (and also fond of childhood), I couldn't pass this up. While this was written even before my dad, I found that I recognized a good deal of the rhymes and superstitions detailed inside. My favorite parts were the first several chapters, which dealt with the kinds of juvenile rhymes I was looking for, as well as various jokes, riddles, and the like. And, despite focusing almost exclusively on British schoolchildren's customs, there were occasional references to similar American traditions. My only quibble with the book is that, as far as entertainment value goes (my primary reason for buying this in the first place), it was a bit front-loaded. Once it started getting into specific traditions/customs that I was largely unfamiliar with (and holidays I hadn't even heard of) I started skimming instead of reading thoroughly. Still, I doubt there is a more entertaining anthropological study out there, at least on this subject. Highly recommended for passive reading or research.

Americans will be particularly fascinated by the slight differences in customs and games among children across the Atlantic, as the Opies catalogue nicknames, rhymes, games, tricks, and half-believed superstitions and spells. fascinating reading.

Rhymes and reasons

Most of the material for this book was gathered fifty years ago in British schools, but I'm sure readers in all countries, for all time, will find it amusing and revealing. When I'd finished it, I felt I had a greater insight into children's minds and concerns, which they express, of course, in the games they play and the rhymes they say. I felt at the same time great respect for children. For unasked and unobserved, they have been keeping our traditions alive for us. Many of their dictums and ditties have changed little for hundreds of years. It seems that all the Barbies and Action Men and other expensive toys can't distract them from this valuable and enjoyable task of conservation.

I was looking into purchasing this book but when I researched the authors name on google I found out that this guy is a fake Christian and after I saw some of his videos in YouTube I was able to see the true person behind this book. I advise everyone that’s considering buying this book to research the author PETER VANDEVER, and you will see who he truly is.

Great content, BUT......

This review is for the Kindle edition. There are so many typos, missing words, and grammatical errors that I could only give this edition 2 stars. I agree completely with the substance of the book, but it was not an enjoyable read because I had to fill in so many blanks for myself in the text because of words being left out or ran together. It was just awful. If this could be fixed, I would gladly change my review to 5 stars.

I love this book and the message of deep passion for revival! It's so poorly edited though that I couldn't finish it. Get it edited and republish it. This is a message that needs to be heard!

Wish there had been more

Initially I was unsure about how I would like this book. Previously I had never read anything with this type of format. The most interesting part of this book was that they all included the line...."I never thought I'd see you again. Surprisingly when I finished reading the collection of short stories, I found myself wishing that there had been more contributors to this book. My favorite short story was the first one written by Allison Brennan. It illustrated a complicated father daughter relationship in an adventure format.

One of my favorite aspects was the mix of genres that were included. It keeps the reader interested and also exposes them to genres that they might not ordinarily read.

Would love to read another book like this with a different line. Kudos to the publishers, The Story Plant.

Well Worth Reading Collection of Short Stories!

I Never Thought I'd See You Again, edited by Lou Aronica, is a collection of sixteen short stories by sixteen successful writers. In the introduction Mr. Aronica reveals that the title is actually a "writing prompt" that was presented to the writers and it is used in all the stories. Each author introduces their offering and I found these to be as interesting as the stories themselves. The subject content varies from story to story and include themes of what really matters in life and death.
In Facing the Mirror, by Dianne Despain, Maggie Holmes learns she has cancer while she is an Emergency Room. Her experience is almost surreal: The physician who gives her the diagnosis has more interest in getting to a party than comforting her patient. Then there is the oncologist who after ordering tests has not gotten back in touch with her with the results after seven weeks. The author's writing is direct and poignant. When reading this well written story the reader is one with Maggie Holmes.
Fabian's Wake by Laura Resnick opens with Eileen expressing surprise and shock when her deceased father leaves his coffin during his wake. It becomes clear that she is the only one to witness this and she is the only one who can hear him speak. There is a reason for these occurrences. With wit and engaging dialogue the author has crafted a marvelous story about regrets and family.
Solomon's Paradox, by Kelly McClymer, is a story I will never forget. Ben is responsible for his best friend's death. In this mesmerizing story, atonement is offered in the form of allowing the deceased friend to return from the dead and to live in Ben's body for one year. This is their haunting tale.
All the stories in this collection leave an impression and each is worth reading.

an interesting book that shouldn't be missed reading

I never thought I'd see you is a collection of prompt short stories that tempted me a lot into reading the book last week. Due to my large TBR list I had to postpone it for the time

being. I was very desperate to read this book as the title was very intriguing and also I love short stories. The advantage of reading short stories is that if one story is bad it doesn't mean all the other stories also have to be bad and you don't have to be disappointed by the whole book.

Since all the stories were written by different authors, I had no expectations, only curious to know what I would find in the next story. It was a pleasant surprise that all the stories were well written in a manner that inspired me a lot.I can not really point out which story I liked the most. There were stories which I hadn't anticipated it to end the way it did.

The first story had so much potential of becoming into a full length novel. I would have liked the story to continue. It was about a father and a daughter relationship. All the characters were well portrayed in this particular story.

Facing the mirror was a story which seemed as if it was real. It has succeeded in delivering the anxieties and real emotions of a cancer patient. After reading it, I had a feeling that a person who is diagnosed with cancer would react the same way as Maggie did. Janet Trotstad's Christmas Eve and Peresphone's granddaugter by Alyssa day was also my favorites.

In one particular story, I lost all my patience, so I flipped through the pages to find out the ending. It was Solomon's Paradox by Kelly Mcclymer. I didn't get this story right when I initially began reading it .I have to appreciate the author for writing this extraordinary story because I found this story to be very different and very likeable.

Overall, I would say this book was interesting to read. I enjoyed reading all the stories but only half of the stories made it to my most favorite list. I don't have anything to criticize about the other half but it's just that the stories weren't impressive as I thought it would be.(3.5)

A thorough introduction to the topic

I took Professor Cherkassky's class at the University of Minnesota which is supplemented by this book. The book is a pretty exhaustive introduction to the topic; it starts by giving a historical perspective, then provides an introduction to basic learning approaches, followed by a chapter on philosophical perspectives and then dives in to statistical learning theory and methods. As a student, the book was sometimes difficult to learn from because it is very math heavy, although examples and figures are scattered throughout to help with understanding. There are also about fifteen exercises at the end of each of the ten chapters, and a "full" homework assignment can be made up of just 2-4 of these problems. This would also be a good reference for anyone looking to get in to research on this subject. It should provide enough information to provide a full understanding of many learning methods, including decision trees, neural network methods, and SVM classifiers & regression, along with methods to combine these methods. Overall a well written and well organized resource.

Thorough, engaging introduction to machine learning

As a physician engaged in clinical research, I am interested in new methods to learn from the volumes of data we generate in the care of patients. This work is a great introduction to newer learning approaches (e.g., neural networks and support vector machines) that are typically not covered in medical school or clinical research training courses. The clarity of writing in Predictive Learning is such that the content is approachable to anyone in any discipline. The real-world examples discussed throughout the text make it a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend Predictive Learning to anyone looking for a thorough, engaging introduction to machine learning.

His studies of income inequality, poverty, discrimination, training programs, tax reform, pensions, welfare, Social Security, and lifetime wage patterns have appeared in both professional journals and popular media. Dr. Schiller is also a frequent commentator on economic policy for television, radio, and newspapers. Dr. Schiller received his PhD from Harvard and his BA degree, with great distinction, from the University of California (Berkeley). When not teaching, writing, or consulting, Professor Schiller is typically on a tennis court, schussing down a ski slope, or enjoying the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe.

Karen Gebhardt is a faculty member in the Department of Economics at Colorado State University (CSU). Dr. Gebhardt has a passion for teaching economics. She regularly instructs large introductory courses in macro and microeconomics, small honors sections of these core principles courses, and upper division courses in Public Finance, Microeconomics, and International Trade, as well as a graduate course in teaching methods. She is an early adopter of technology in the classroom and advocates strongly for it because she sees the difference it makes in student engagement and learning. Dr. Gebhardt has taught online consistently since 2005 and coordinates the online program within the Department of Economics at CSU. She also supervises and mentors the department’s graduate teaching assistants and adjunct instructors. Dr. Gebhardt was the recipient of the Water Pik Excellence in Education Award in 2006 and was awarded the CSU Best Teacher Award in 2015. Dr. Gebhardt’s research interests, publications, and presentations involve the economics of human–wildlife interaction, economics education, and the economics of gender in the United States economy. Before joining CSU, she worked as an Economist at the United States Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Wildlife Services/National Wildlife Research Center conducting research on the interactions of humans and wildlife, such as the economic effects of vampire bat-transmitted rabies in Mexico; the potential economic damage from the introduction of invasive species to the Islands of Hawaii; bioeconomic modeling of the impacts of wildlife-transmitted disease; and others. In her free time, Dr. Gebhardt enjoys learning about new teaching methods that integrate technology, as well as rock climbing and camping in the Colorado Rockies and beyond.
