Outstanding Overview

This is an excellent example of historical theology. It ranges from the ancient Old Testament to contemporary theology and identifies with precision the twists and turns that make up the Christian theological traditions. Capetz covers an amazing sweep of history in this brief book and he make complex thought accessible to academics and lay people, alike. This would be a great text for a church book study. And, it makes a great refresher course for those of us whose Divinity School theology courses are slipping from memory.

Five BIG stars

This is, simply put, an excellent book, historical theology at its best. The scope is very wide, yet not at the cost of useful or thought-provoking depth on this topic - all the more remarkable in a book of 192 pages. If only more authors would think so clearly before beginning to write and remember the virtue of brevity!
Capetz has a way of re-explaining or re-examining the familiar ideas and putting them into a fresh perspective grounded in history. He clearly shows how some tenets of Christianity about God began and evolved, and does so with a fine and subtle economy of language.
A fine book, a pleasure to read and reflect on. I look forward to more from this talented author and thinker.

Excellent

It can be exceedingly difficult to translate complex beliefs and structures into a few brief, easily digested paragraphs without stripping them of significance and deeper meaning. It is harder, still, to do this and keep the book easy to read and accessible to a broad audience. Yet, Paul Capetz has done just that in this small book. The section on process theology comes to mind, here. I highly recommend it to those new to such studies and, equally so, to those who are well versed in the subject and can appreciate a concise survey. I have given away several copies of this great little book.

A Truly Marvelous Value

The last chapter on the Euler-MacLauren summation formula, and attendant interrelations among the Zeta function, Bernoulli Numbers and Bernoulli Polynomials is alone worth three times the price of this gem. Chock full of recipes and explanations of many of those little annoying points you don't understand fully. Do you REALLY understand what 'asymptotically equal to (~)' means? Heartily recommended!

How to tell if you are a "formalist" --

Anything to do with "infinity" is fascinating. Much of the history of mathematics has been a duel between those who see "infinity" as a delusion and impediment to progress, and those who see it as the greatest tool in the mathematician's toolbox. Infinite series, which may be loosely defined as sums of an infinite number of terms (numbers), take on some of this fascination. Although this book will appeal mainly to the professional mathematician, there is enough historical and elementary material to profit many college students- and possibly even some high school students.
Professional mathematician will find this book useful for filling in gaps left by topics not covered in traditional courses. An example is the detailed discussion of Euler's summation formula, which goes far beyond the simplified form usually encountered in textbooks. Another fascinating topic covered is divergent series, and methods by which meaningful sums can be assigned to these. There is something counterintuitive -- and, frankly, mind-boggling -- about many of these results.

Mathematicians can be put into several categories: 1) applied-mathematicians/computer-scientists/engineers concerned with solving practical problems, 2) those concerned with pedagogy and the history of mathematics, 3) epistemology and rigorous proofs, and 4) formalists. The fourth category, formalists, is difficult to define, but may be described as those that emphasize obtaining new results through formal (technical) manipulations, without undue concern regarding the meaning of the intermediate steps. The greatest exponents of this art were Euler and Ramanujan, though Fourier, Dirac and Heaviside are also solid members of this camp.
I take this digression because I feel that this book mainly appeals to the fourth type of mathematician. Although there are some general results in the theory of infinite series, any competent mathematicians can, in a few minutes, write a dozen infinite series which defy summation. As an example, the series associated with the Riemann zeta function of EVEN arguments were first summed by Euler. The sums arising from ODD arguments have defied summation to this day. Why this should be so is intriguing, but unknown. Incidentally, Euler's method of summation will make a "rigorists" hair stand upon ends. But he got the job done!

Kindle edition flawed

The Kindle edition is a flawed copy of the paper edition. I only have two examples, but being a math text where every symbol counts, that's enough for me to abandon the electronic version in favor of the paper version.

Example 1: Page 6 in the print book compares sets named M and N, but on the Kindle these are both referred to as M.
Example 2: Reference numbers set aside in the margin of the paper edition get interspersed throughout the Kindle edition. This is confusing as they sometimes come in the middle of an ordered list.

I encountered both problems very early, so there may be many more problems. The text is already a challenge for me, so I don't need additional, unnecessary problems to sort out. I do not recommend the Kindle version.

Codependents guide to dealing with life.

This is one of the most profound books I have found in dealing with codependency. Darlene uses so many great life experiences to teach us. If you are an individual who is recovering from codependency or a victim of behavior of a codependent you seriously need to buy this book. There is great insight on how to deal with these issues. Darlene opens up many doors that to me were sealed shut. I have learned to address so many things that I was not even aware of that constituted behavior of codependency. As a codependent whom is still in the recovery process I urge you to buy this book. It is probably the best investment in your future out there. Thank You Darlene for your hard work and effort and sharing your life experiences to help benefit all of those who still suffer with codependency.

A must read for anybody interested in really understanding the source of relationship problems.

I bought the first edition of this book about 8 months ago and worked my way through the text and exercises. Darlene clearly knows what she is talking about. She speaks with a voice of authority as one who is well versed in the field and also with the voice of compassion as one who has surmounted her own challenges. I feel this book should be recommended reading for anybody who wishes to improve their relationships, most importantly the relationship with oneself. It has been the catalyst for some serious breakthroughs in awareness for me personally and it is slowly but surely changing the way I relate to others . I now have a clearer grasp of the concept of interpersonal boundaries and the difference between boundaries and barriers. I no longer am the dumping ground of the universe for other peoples dramas, traumas and unresolved projections. I am taking more time to focus on my needs, wants and desires. I no longer feel I have to jump right in and fix the problems of the world while simultaneously abandoning myself. Did it happen over night? No. Do I slip up from time to time? Yes. However I am catching myself out with these old behaviours more quickly . Do however be warned! When you are no longer the door mat of the universe many people around you will not like it and you have to hold firm in your resolve to claim, own and acknowledge your right to be a sovereign being. You are no longer a slave to another persons reality and you can start living your own life.

Everybody I know can benefit from Codependency for Dummies

Codependency for Dummies. I am surprised to be the first person reviewing this book. It is fascinating, the kind of book that is difficult to close once it is opened. I enjoyed taking the two tests in Chapter 4, but I was disappointed that no criteria accompanied the second test in order for the reader/test-taker to determine whether he was codependent.

According to the standards in Codependency for Dummies, most of the people I know are codependent to one extent or another,and most of us need to work on our codependency. The rest of us have close acquaintances who need help in this area.

The concluding paragraph in the book is "Don't Isolate" -- what useful advice! Yet we live in an isolated world. Up and down the street are single people -- some retired or working at home alone -- some without any companionship, not even a dog. Isolation is a way of life. Much of the time in our education system and in work environments we are in a society of isolation.

I agree with much of what Darlene Lancer, licensed marriage and family therapist, has to say. We really need to work on our codependence and move out of the mire of low self-esteem. I do not, however, agree with her philosophy about spirituality. She states, "Whether or not you believe in God, a spiritual practice is an excellent means of creating a deeper relationship with our Self."

The book is well organized. The Dummies approach is a good method of presenting this thorough manual of examining relationships.

About the Author
Aristophanes was born, probably in Athens, c. 449 BC and died between 386 and 380 BC. Little is known about his life, but there is a portrait of him in Plato's Symposium. He was twice threatened with prosecution in the 420s for his outspoken attacks on the prominent politician Cleon, but in 405 he was publicly honored and crowned for promoting Athenian civic unity in The Frogs. Aristophanes had his first comedy produced when he was about twenty-one, and wrote forty plays in all. The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are published in the Penguin Classics series as The Birds and Other Plays, Lysistrata and Other Plays, and The Wasps/The Poet and the Women/The Frogs.

Pick your translation carefully

Having read several different translations of Lysistrata, I can report that the one you select may make all the difference in your opinion of this early comedy. Roche's translation is very vulgar but has good footnotes: get ready for cockney Spartans, however. Jack Lindsay's translation, done in 1925 (included in the Bantam edition of Aristophanes) seems to be overly literary in comparison to the original but lacks notes. It reads well, though sounds a little old-fashioned. The bawdry is present but made less direct; in this one the Spartan dialect is Scottish.

I found Parker's translation to be the least satisfactory. The "hillbilly" dialect he gives the Spartans is painfully overdone,not to mention inaccurate, and the speeches are awkward and pedestrian. An excellent edition overall is Alan H. Sommerstein's in the Penguin Classic "Aristophanes: Lysistrata and Other Plays." The introduction and notes are extremely informative, and the translation itself strikes the right note to represent Aristophanes' style in English. (Once again, though, the Spartans are Scots.)

But perhaps the best choice is Sarah Ruden's 2003 edition. Her dialogue is unusually funny without straying too far from the original. Added value comes from her four very readable essays on Greek democracy, warfare, women, and comedy. It's also printed on quality paper and comes with a great cover!

Make love, not war!

"Lysistrata," the play by Aristophanes, has been published in an anonymous translation as part of the Dover Thrift Editions series. The opening commentary on the text notes that this play dates back to 411 BCE. Aristophanes tells the story of his title character, an Athenian woman who, weary of war, conceives a bold plan: she enlists the women of Greece to refuse to have sex with their men until the men make peace.
The plot of this play is thus quite simple, but it is marvelously handled by the author. The play is a rich and effective mix of slapstick antics, bawdy wordplay, and biting sociopolitical commentary. At the center of this enjoyable play is the commanding figure of Lysistrata. Articulate and resolute, she is truly one of the great characters of world drama; she's a woman with a bold vision.
Although it is a funny comedy, "Lysistrata" does deal with some serious issues that remain relevant after all these centuries. Recommended as a companion text: "Necessary Targets," a play by Eve Ensler. This non-comedic drama also deals with the issue of women in a country at war.
